If you have read up on your lacrosse history, you already know that Jesuit French Missionary Jean de Brebeuf was the first European to record the game of “lacrosse” in the 1600’s. He coined the game lacrosse because the head of the stick looked like a Bishops Crozier. Modern day Jesuit schools across the country have since embraced the sport and help spread the game nationwide and around the world.

The Jesuit Lacrosse Classic was started 19 years ago by the head coaches of Gonzaga and Georgetown Prep in Washington D.C to get like minded Men For Others from around the country together for fellowship, lacrosse and to realize they are part of something bigger, a greater network of Jesuit brotherhood that expands beyond their own school and community. In the 12 years that Coach Chris Surran has been the head coach at Jesuit Dallas, the team has been on and off participants in the Jesuit Lacrosse Classic. Jesuit Dallas has gone to Washington D.C., Arizona and Houston on these trips. This year one of the top west coast teams St. Ignatius (San Francisco) and one of the top east coast teams, Gonzaga (D.C.) is coming to Dallas for the event.

In true “Men For Others” fashion, this year the Jesuit Lacrosse Classic is honoring Welles Crowther #19, “The Man in the Red Bandana”. Welles passed away during the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. 9/11 first responders and Welles parents will be in attendance over the course of the weekend. To see an ESPN video about Welles CLICK HERE.

Gonzaga (1-0), the seven-time defending champion WCAC champion, is ranked No. 6 in the C2C Lacrosse North America Rankings; St. Ignatius Prep (2-1) was formerly No. 20 and is ranked No. 4 in the TopLaxRecruits Western Rankings. Dallas Jesuit (5-1) is the defending Texas Division I state champion.

The weekend is full of activities for the three teams and their families, but the following events are open to the public should you be in town and choose to attend:

Friday March 17, 2017
6:20 p.m. Pre-game Presentation with Crowther Family and 9/11 first responders. (Postell Stadium)
6:30 p.m. Gonzaga (Light) vs. St. Ignatius (Dark) in Postell Stadium (Admission $5)

Saturday, March 18, 2017
2:30 p.m. Jesuit (Dark) vs. St. Ignatius (Light) in Stadium (Admission $5)

Sunday, March 19, 2017
11:00 a.m. Gonzaga (Dark) vs. Jesuit Dallas (Light) ($5 Admission)
