DALLAS, TX – More than 150 boys and girls began competing Saturday in the C2C Spotlight recruiting event and instructional clinic here at The Greenhill School.

C2C Sporlight guest coach Ashley Bruns (Arizona State assistant) gets the girls ready for a drill

The two-day event features instruction from college coaches, who run clinics like college practices with an emphasis on cutting-edge positional skill development. Players also are competing in a series of showcase games. Guest coaches also participate in Q & A sessions with parents and players to provide insight into the current and ever-changing recruiting process.

“I am just trying to improve,” said 2019 attackman Wilson Sands of Highland Park, TX. “It’s a cool bunch of really good college coaches and it’s fun that they are teaching us everything they teach their players. They have an abundance of stuff in their arsenal that they have been sharing with us.”

DALLAS – Here are some the players who impressed during C2C Spotlight 2016 at The Greenhill School.

Makay Hansen, 2019, M Highland Park HS, TX. Hansen had a great weekend scoring 14 goals and had 5 assists. The midfielder has good stick skills and foot work to go with already being a solid athlete. The game comes naturally to him and he plays with confidence out there.

Highland park 2018 DEF Andrew Stanzel
Highland park 2019 DEF Andrew Stanzel

Wilson Sands, 2019, A, Highland Park HS, TX. Highland Park is going to be an elite high school team in the next four years. The Scots have a solid attackman in Sands, who is quick and dodges well. The sophomore attackman instantly jumped on college coaches’ radars on day 1.

Hudson Bearden, 2017, FO/M, Fort Worth Saints, TX. Bearden, for being the only uncommitted senior at the event, played great. Bearden is coming off a collarbone injury and he has been getting back into shape all summer long. He was one of the best faceoff men at Spotlight and Bearden is ready to have a big fall. The senior was selected to his third FaceOff Academy Showcase, which is this November.

Aiden Johnston, 2019, Defense, Dallas Jesuit, TX. Johnston is a big athletic defenseman who has a tremendous upside. Love the way he clears the ball up field and once he gets it to an attackman or middie, he hustles back to the defense side. Johnston has excellent footwork.

William Moran, 2019, Goalie, Jesuit College Prep, TX. Moran made some great saves in several games. The sophomore netminder is alert in cage and has quick hands.

Ethan Hayes, 2020, FO/M, St. Mary’s Hall, TX. Hayes is a scrappy. He has a good faceoff game. He hustles down the field when he wins a face and moves the ball quickly to an open teammate. Hayes had some beautiful goals, too.

Colin Campbell, 2020, Attack, St. Mark’s, TX. Campbell was my favorite 2020 from the C2C Spotlight. The freshman has good lax I.Q. and he plays the game with confidence. Campbell also scored some beautiful goals during the weekend.

Jake Williams, 2019, Midfield, Edmund Memorial, OK. Williams continues to improve every time I have seen him play. Williams played on the Southwest team at the Under Armour underclass games this summer. The Oklahoma sophomore stood out to many of the college coaches at Spotlight.

Jacob Jackson, 2019, Midfield, Jesuit, TX. Jackson was another player I enjoyed watching play during the weekend. The Texas sophomore middie is big, athletic, and strong. I will be very interested to see how he plays this fall and can’t see Jackson being uncommitted for very long.

Andrew Stanzel, 2019, Defense, Highland Park, TX. Stanzel impressed many at spotlight with his stick work and Lax I.Q. You could tell Stanzel benefited from the college coach clinics and picked up on some tips. He is a smart kid with some great checks on D.

Running a lacrosse recruiting event during a two day weekend takes hard work, dedication from your staff, and Mother Nature to cooperate. C2C Lacrosse hosted its fifth C2C Spotlight showcase in Dallas and the event continues to get better. C2C Lax invites some of the top coaches from the best lacrosse college programs in the country to fly in during a weekend of the middle of October to recruit some of the best talent in and around the Lone Star state, while providing elite instruction sessions before games begin. C2C does a great job taking care if its guests by making sure everyone is enjoying the Texas lacrosse experience. But the one thing that stands out the most is how polite and courteous the players are. You can tell these kids are enjoying the game and love to compete, because they play other sports as well as lacrosse. But the “Yes sirs,” and the “Hello, how are you’s?” are really great and you can tell these kids are raised he right way. The game is definitely growing at a fast pace in Texas and it was evident this past weekend. The stick skills are getting better, the lax I.Q. is up to par, and the basic fundamentals caught a lot of the college coaches’ eyes.

What will you major in/study? Undecided/Design or Pre-Vet

Why did you choose USC? “I chose USC because it is everything I was looking for in a university. The first time I arrived on campus, it felt like home. The players and coaching staff welcomed me like I was part of the team already. I knew it was the kind of program I wanted to be a part of after visiting and watching them play and practice.

“There are many other schools that have teams consistently going to championships, but USC is on the rise and they become stronger each time they play and that is what I want to be a part of and what I love about this program.

“I knew that I was set on going to USC when I started comparing every other school to USC. Nothing quite compared to it for me – the incredible academics and academic support available, the coaches, the atmosphere, the players I met, the amazing facilities and everyone just seemed to love being there. I am honored and excited to become a Trojan!”

HS team’s outlook for 2017 season? “We lost a few very talented Seniors from last year but have some amazing players across all grade levels and we hope to contend for the Texas State Championship again this year (lost the Championship last year in OT).”

Thank You: “I would love to thank my coaches Maggie Koch and Molly Ford for helping me get to this point. I would not have wanted any other mentors and coaches by my side for this process. They are amazing coaches and have done so much for me and they continue to teach girls how to learn and love the game of lacrosse.

“I would also like to thank my parents for traveling with me to every tournament, camp, or showcase and my twin brother, Connor, for his support and countless hours of lacrosse in the backyard. No matter what, they stood by me and helped me achieve an opportunity of a lifetime.

“Outside of my family, the one person that has been a part of my lacrosse career the longest is my good friend Jay Browne. I want to thank her for being the best teammate on and off the field since 5th grade. Lastly, I would love to thank Lindsay, Devon and Alyssa for welcoming me to the Trojan family. Fight On!”

COLUMBIA, Md. – The Players who Shined from last weekend’s Big 12 Fall Lacrosse Invitational.

Najee Taylor-Loyola Academy (IL) 2019 Dukes LC, Midfielder- Taylor can move up and down the field well. Very athletic. Has a good shot on goal when on the run. Just committed to Notre Dame.

Charles Wassberg
Plano West 2018 G Charles Wassberg (C2C)

Wilson Sands-Highland Park (TX) 2019 C2C, Attackman – I’ve mentioned Sands in my Top Players from C2C Spotlight last month, but it is hard to not include him after seeing him play against tough comp at the Big 12 Invitational and making the all star game. One of the best left handed shots. Great footwork and dodges well. Curious to see where Sands lands.

Tommy Hellman-Darien (CT) 2019 CT Chargers- The way Hellman plays the game is eye-catching. The Darien soph has a great shot on cage and he hustles from D-mid to O-mid. Fun to watch.

Zachary Coar- La Salle College HS (PA) 2019 Dukes LC, attack- Coar is a threat from behind the cage, up top, or on the wings. His shot on cage is lethal and he can shoot with both hands. Great skill set.

Cole Witman – Eastern York (PA) 2019 Dukes LC, Midfield – Witman is a big, physical and well conditioned middie. Love how he moves the ball. Good fundamentals. Another fun player to watch and should be a star at the next level.

Charles Wassberg- Plano West (TX) 2018 C2C, goalie- The way Wassberg has played this summer combined with this fall, the Plano West junior should be closing in on a college home soon. The C2C product makes the tough saves and has good awareness of where the ball is. Wassberg played in the entire all star game at the Big 12 Invitational. He put on a show for the coaches in attendance.

Will Sherwood – Archbishop Spalding (MD) 2019 Annapolis Hawks, midfielder- Sherwood caught my eye in the 2019 All Star Game with his unselfishness, his ability to do the little things like hustle on and off the field and encourage his teammates, and he made a lovely pass to Spencer Wirtheim of Orange Crush for a goal.

Robert Seeley- Marcellus (NY) 2019 Orange Crush, Goalie- Seeley made some big saves in the all star game. The sophomore netminder has quick hands and moves the ball up field without panicking.

Zach Dudley- Boys’ Latin (MD) 2020 Annapolis Hawks, FOGO –
Dudley is a future star for the Lakers in the making. The freshman is quick and does a good job getting to the ground ball after a faceoff win. The 2020 Hawks group is impressive and Dudley is one of the reasons why.

Casey McDermott – Brighton (NY) 2020 Sweetlax, Attackman – Casey has a solid game and the freshman has a good lax I.Q. The recent Johns Hopkins commit had a beautiful goal against the Rock 2020 team.

Why did you choose Canisius? “I chose Canisius because it gave me the opportunity to play lacrosse at a very high level and still receive an excellent college education.

“Since I started playing lacrosse back in the 7th grade, I’ve dreamed about playing and living on the East Coast and Canisius allowed me to fulfill that dream.

“When I first visited the campus I felt very welcomed by Coach (Randy) Mearns, the Head Lacrosse Coach, and I loved the passion he had for lacrosse and the goal he had for his team; which was winning a National Championship.

“While at Canisius I will also be participating in the Army ROTC program, which was a big factor in my decision to attend Canisius.”

HS team’s outlook for 2017 season? “The 2017 season looks promising for us so far, we have a young group of really dedicated and skilled guys to replace the vast amount of Seniors we graduated last year. We will be looking for some of our younger guys to step into starting roles and we will be led by our veteran Juniors and Seniors who contributed a lot in the past few years on the varsity level.”

Thank You: “I would like to thank my parents for always supporting me in everything I have done and helping me along every step of the way.

“I would also like to thank my Coach, Bill Cafferata, for helping me throughout the entire recruiting process and continuing to support and progress me in my lacrosse endeavors; he has been a great role model and lacrosse coach since my freshman year of high school.

“I would also like to thank my Coach, Cody Gould, who is a Canisius Alumni and who introduced me to Coach Mearns of Canisius. Lastly I would like to thank every member of the Loan Star Squad, especially Tiger Lord for working with me and pushing me to become a better face-off athlete.”

High School: Grapevine High School, TX

Graduation Year: 2017

Position: Attack

College Choice: Rhodes College

Club Affiliation: Iron Horse Lacrosse

Lacrosse Honors: 2016 Texas High School State Champions, All-Tournament Team 2016 TX State Championships, T99 Showcase All-Star, 2015 Philly Showcase

What will you major in/study? Economics and Finance

Why did you choose Rhodes? “As one of the top colleges in the nation, the academics at Rhodes were definitely important. Then, the rapid and consistent improvement of the lacrosse program under Coach (Dave) Zazzaro and Coach (Jeremy) Phelps was the other deciding factor. After only five seasons as a program, I know that Coach Zazzaro will continue to recruit better and better lacrosse players from all over the country, due to the great academics at Rhodes and it’s awesome location in Memphis, TN.

“Not many college lacrosse programs are located in a major metro area like Memphis, with it’s warm weather and great culture, recreation and entertainment opportunities. Rhodes is a sleeping giant that is now primed to start competing for championships.”

HS team’s outlook for 2017 season? “After winning the state championship last year, my high school team (Colleyville Lacrosse) is looking to “repeat” this season. Although we lost several incredible Seniors who are now playing college lacrosse, we return several all-state players and lots of young talent at every position.”

Thank You: “I would first like to thank my mom and dad for encouraging me to try lacrosse, as a skeptical 6th grader. My dad freely gave his time and financial support to travel thousands of miles, by air and car, for camps, showcases, tournaments and college visits all over the country. My mom was supportive throughout, and even when she had no idea what was going on during the games, she was my most committed and vocal fan.

“I would like to thank my high school head coach, Gary Dennington, for teaching me how to be mentally tough and a leader on the lacrosse field. My high school assistant coach, Ryan Gradke, was also my first youth coach. Coach Gradke taught me how to play great defense, and was always a great resource on club programs, recruiting tournaments and any college lacrosse question.

“I would also like to thank my Iron Horse coach, Chris Surran, for just giving me a chance. Coach Surran taught me so much about the game, and I can’t thank him enough for pushing me and never letting me get away with lazy lacrosse – ever.

“Everyone mentioned was kind enough to take a personal interest not only in my lacrosse skills, but also my development as a young man. I thank God for all of them, as well as for my family and friends who pushed, loved and supported my lacrosse pursuits.”
